What is a “notary public”?
A notary public is someone who can notarize legal documents and who can also administer and take oaths and affirmations.
Documents are notarized to deter fraud and to ensure they are properly executed. A Notary identifies the person signing a document through obtaining a copy of government photo ID, and witnesses the signature. If a document is being certified as a true copy, the Notary will require the original document to compare it to the copy being certified, so they can confirm the copy is a true copy of the original document.
Ontario notaries public can also administer oaths, witness signatures on affidavits and statutory declarations, and provide acknowledgements, and witness signatures for consent to travel documents.
